I moved in March and while unpacking some boxes I came across my old quilling set from 2003. I stopped and thought, "How can I update and use quilling in a whole new way?"
The first thing I thought of was shimmer and some sparkle. Then, I thought of some of the most popular shapes in scrapbooking and card making today. Immediately, I thought of cupcakes and banners.
Here's a mini lesson on quilling and some fun quilled shapes that really add a fresh look to cards and scrapbook pages.
Quilling is the art of paper curling. Essentially, you are rolling thin strips of paper around a metal tool. There are two basic types of tools. The slotted tool has a notch to insert the paper into and the needle tool does not. The slotted tool is easier to use for beginners; it holds the paper more securely. The needle tool does not make a crimp at the end of your paper.
Here are the supplies you need to get started: a quilling tool, long thin strips of colored paper and glue. Additionally, I used Glimmer Mist and Stickles.
To begin, place one end of a strip of paper into the notch of the slotted tool.
Hold the paper with your fingers and twirl the tool to create the curled paper circle.
Once you have curled the whole strip, slide it off the tool.
Your circle will relax and expand.
The next step is to add a dab of glue to the end of the paper and press firmly to close the circle.
Once you have created this basic circle shape, there are dozens of shapes you can create. Here are three shapes I created to assemble the elements on my card.
I pinched four corners to make the square shape. For the half circle I pinched two evenly spaced corners leaving a dome look at the top. For the triangle, I pinched three equally spaced corners.
Here are the cards I made using my quilled items.
