Travel Scrapbooking: New York City

Whether it's your first visit or one of many, a trip to New York City can be a thrill. There is so much going on and so much to do; it's often difficult to know where to start. The same can be true when it comes to scrapbooking that visit to New York City. Here are some suggestions to get you started.

What to include

The New York City skyline is one of the most famous in the world. It is easy to photograph, provided you are not actually in the city. If you are arriving by plane, you may take a nice photo of the skyline out the plane window. Likewise, if you are driving, you may be able to take a photo out the car window before crossing onto Manhattan Island. The skyline can also be viewed from a boat.

There are many great museums in New York and your visit will probably include some of them.  Sometimes, photos of museum exhibits can be tricky, but a postcard purchased at the gift shop can be an easy solution.  Of course, the huge dinosaur skeletons at the Museum of Natural History make a great photo if you can find a place to pose among all the people looking at them. Consider combining many museum photos into a single layout.

A trip to New York often includes stops at many famous landmarks such as Times Square, Rockefeller Center, NYC Bridges, Yankee Stadium, and the Statue of Liberty.

For visitors who don't live in a large city, the public transportation in New York City can be an adventure in itself. Don't forget to take photos of the buses and taxis, and while riding the ferries or subways. If you are concerned about looking like a vulnerable tourist taking photos with your big SLR on the subway, use your camera phone.

There are so many other things in New York: the parks, dining, shopping, the streets, the theater, etc.  Take photos and include them in your scrapbook. There are many reasons to visit New York, but if one of your reasons is to visit friends or family, don't forget to take photos of the people you are visiting and include them in your scrapbook as well.

When you return home and start scrapbooking, there are many famous songs and quotes from New York City that you can use as page titles. Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

  • A New York State of Mind
  • We'll take Manhattan
  • New York, New York
  • The Big Apple
  • I love New York

Remembering

If this is your first trip to New York since 2001, you may choose to visit the site of the former World Trade Center. Whether you visit ground zero or not, you may choose to scrap some memories of September 11th.  This can be done with a photo from ground zero, or of some other part of the city that causes you to remember the events of that day. Don't forget to include your feelings in your journaling.
