Product Name: The Gypsy by Provo Craft
The Gypsy is a portable, hand-held design studio that works with all of the Provo Craft Cricut machines, except the Imagine machine. It allows you to store all of your cartridges so that you can create on the go. You can preview and design with all of the Cricut Cartridges in the entire Cricut library, as well as search the library for any image that you need. However, you must own and link a cartridge before you can cut images from it. Some of its other capabilities are image welding, rotating, flipping, and sizing. With its ease of use and portability, the Gypsy greatly enhances the functionality of your Cricut machine
I have to admit that I was one of the last hold-outs for the Gypsy. Since I already owned Design Studio, I didn't think the Gypsy would be much different. I was so wrong! With the Gypsy, I don't need to be connected to a computer in order to design and create my scrapbook pages, cards, school projects, etc. I can attend crops and other events without carrying all of my cartridges with me. The Gypsy is so small and lightweight that I can put it right in my purse and take it just about anywhere.
There are a few improvements that I would like to see Provo Craft make, however. Although the Gypsy is easy to use, I would prefer if the icons on the screen were easier to read and distinguish from one another. Fit to Page and Auto Fill options (which are available on the Expression and Create) would be very helpful as well.
Even with room for improvement, the Gypsy is a sound investment and would be a wonderful addition to your arsenal of crafting tools. And, of course, it's fun to use, too!
Tips and Techniques:
- Be patient when syncing your Gypsy to your computer for the first time. It can take several hours, so don't rush it.
- Make sure that your Gypsy is completely charged before you cut your images. You don't want it to shut off in the middle of your project.
- Don't worry if your Cricut appears to stop cutting before it's finished. Sometimes it takes a minute for an intricate cut to be transmitted from the Gypsy to the Cricut.
With the Gypsy, I'm a much more productive and efficient designer. I can lay out all of my images and see exactly where they are going to be cut on the mat. This makes it easy for me to use up my scraps and minimize waste. And the money I'm saving can be used for - what else? - more Cricut cartridges! Pick up a Gypsy today. You'll be glad you did.
Project Ideas and Examples:
These are treat bags that I made for Easter. I was able to lay out all of my scraps of paper to cut multiple pieces for the bag decorations.
This leprechaun was easy to cut out, because (again) I could see exactly where to place all of the colors of cardstock on my mat.
I used my Gypsy to design the title and embellishments for this layout. I was able to use several different cartridges and features without the hassle of changing cartridges and re-loading mats.
