Basic Grey Interview - 2005
Scrapbook.com interviewed BasicGrey, one of our 2005 $15,000 Layout Contest sponsors. Here are the questions we asked and the answers they gave about where they started, where they're headed, what excites them, and much more!
Scrapbook.com - Can you give us a brief history of BasicGrey?
BasicGrey, located in Kaysville, Utah, is a passionate design and product development scrapbook company that has fast become the “darling” of the scrapbook industry since the debut of its first four ground-breaking paper lines in July 2004. Rachel Brenchley, founder of BasicGrey, has always had a passion for great design and found scrapbook paper design to be a creative outlet to showcase her artistic talent and true entrepreneurial spirit.
After a successful career in advertising, art direction, and graphic design Rachel moved on to pursue a career as a stay-at-home mom; a truly satisfying job that continues to occupy her heart and mind. Spending time with her adorable kids, Sophie and Dawson, is a top priority for Rachel. However, needing a creative outlet for her raw, artistic talent Rachel designed and developed the first of the original cutting-edge paper lines that is now known as BasicGrey.
Greg Brenchley was "hired" (or obligated, as the case may be) to work by association and now serves as the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer of BasicGrey. Greg, who oversees the day-to-day operations of BasicGrey, previously held a position at KPMG (one of the top four accounting firms) and enjoys the many challenges his young new company presents.
Greg and Rachel are thrilled to be working in the scrapbooking industry and appreciate all of the support and enthusiasm they have received since launching BasicGrey in July 2004.
Scrapbook.com - What differentiates you from other Scrapbook product manufacturers?

Scrapbook.com - What trends do you see developing over 2005?
Scrapbookers are just now learning to develop and nurture their own style and are looking for products that keep their pages fresh and unique. Scrapbook artists are also craving scrapbook tools, designs and products that allow them to create quick, simple, easy, and beautiful designs that reflect their own personality and unique style.
Scrapbook.com - How will BasicGrey look to capitalize on these trends?
BasicGrey will continue to produce distinctive, innovative papers and page elements to help scrapbookers stay consistent and true to their style. BasicGrey’s line of coordinating paper and page elements allows scrapbookers to immediately add a creative flair to any project with little effort. Scrapbook.com - What new products have you recently released or will soon be releasing?
BasicGrey released four new stylish paper collections, along with 3” monograms and die cut CardFolders at the February 2005 CHA tradeshow. BasicGrey also developed a ground-breaking partnership with K & Company to produce a variety stylish albums, page embellishments, and must-have scrapbook products to coordinate with the popular BasicGrey Sublime and Motifica lines.
Scrapbook.com - What are your most popular products?
BasicGrey’s original paper line continues to be very popular. BasicGrey’s inventive Monograms and CardFolders were a big hit at the 2005 CHA tradeshow, as well as the distinctive new Lollipop Shoppe and Phresh&Phunky paper lines. Customers can not get enough of BasicGrey!
Scrapbook.com - Can you tell us more about one of your most popular products and why scrapbookers would be interested in it?
BasicGrey’s fun and imaginative monograms are 3” tall, precision die cut letters that coordinate with six of BasicGrey’s popular paper lines. They can be inked, chalked, painted, distressed, and embellished to add dimension and charm to any layout!
Scrapbook.com - What advice would you have for new scrapbookers who are just getting into scrapbooking?
Scrapbooking is a form of art, and all artists should start out with good tools. A quality paper trimmer, dry and wet adhesives, inspirational idea books, an x-acto knife, dye based inks, and a collection of patterned papers and cardstock is essential to start your scrapbook hobby.
Scrapbook.com - What advice would you have for the experienced scrapbooker who is looking to get more done, in less time, and spend less money doing it?
Stay true to your unique style! It is reflective of who you are as an artist. Although it’s perfectly fine to try to replicate or “scrap lift” another designer’s creation or idea – always remember to put the “you” in all you do!
Scrapbook.com - Where does BasicGrey hope to be in 10 years?
The fast-paced scrapbook industry continues to grow at an unprecedented rate and BasicGrey intends to lead every step of the way with fresh, inventive, trend setting products and designs!
