Typing on a spiral or free form shape--directions   (7 comments, 1012 views) Friday, 11 July 2008
You need INKSCAPE. (It's free and downloadable for MAC or PC. And BTW-- it's a dot org NOT a dot com.) But for MAC using Leopard, it may not download correctly.I've included the fix that worked for me way down at the bottom...

Here is what I did. I use a MAC but I bet the directions would be about the same.

1. Using the "A" text tool on left, write a sentence.  Using the Spiral, draw a spiral.

2.  Select both. Go to top menu and choose TEXT--> Put on Path.

3. To remove the spiral line, Go to top menu Object---> Fill and Stroke. Then click Stroke Paint and check NO PAINT.

4. Save it. It saves as a .svg format.  To change the file format (I did it to jpeg). Export and choose .png format. OH you can change the resolution (dpi) to 300 here if you want to print it. It's set for a good resolution already for the internet. I open it (and for me it opens in "Preview" application.)  I changed the format to jpeg and saved it. Then I opened it in Photoshop Elements ... but I don't think you have to.

I just tried drawing a squiggle and the type can follow that too!  I bet you can draw in a flower shape or anything!

So now I'll print it on vellum.  I'll treat the right side with The Perfect Printing Pouch prior to printing. the left side is untreated plain vellum. You can see the difference on the blue printed striped on the vellum. The untreated side resists the ink but the treated side (right half) is just PERFECT!

PS Here's another option: festisite dot com. This site is also free.

Go to TOOLS--> Party Printer. You can create 6 layouts for your text including a spiral, a maze, waves, a rebus, heart and banner.  You just type it in and it downloads a pdf of your words into that shape. I was able to open it in Photoshop Elements to resize and set resolution to 300 dpi before opening it.)

The site also has some other cool stuff to check out!!!

Put in a word, and it generates rhyming words-though a lot of them seem foreign or made up!
Create a dollar bill after uploading a photo (in place of George)...or other bills besides a one.
Create a playing card with a photo instead of the queen or king.
Create a love poem.

They also have links to go to sites to create monuments with your uploaded image (think Statue of liberty) or send a message in a smoke signal.

FIX for booting Inkscape on MACs if it won't load/open. (IGNORE if Inkscape works fine for you!)
1. You may have to download Xquartz (X11 v2.2.3). ALSO, it worked for a while and stopped so I think after automatic software updates, I may have to do this again. So I'm keeping the instructions here so it's handy.: http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki/X112.3.0

2. Open Terminal.app (in Applications -> Utilities) and type nano /Applications/Inkscape.app/Contents/Resources/script

b. Press CTRL+V (scrolls down a page)

c. Change the code (use the arrows keys to get to the right part) from:

"""
else
# Leopard onwards...

# Warn the user about time-consuming generation of fontconfig caches.
test -d ${HOME}/.fontconfig || exit 12
"""

to:

"""
else
# Leopard onwards...

# Warn the user about time-consuming generation of fontconfig caches.
test -d ${HOME}/.fontconfig
"""

d. Save changes by pressing CTRL+O and then ENTER to confirm

e. Run Inkscape and wait for first-time caching

Also it seems that having the "authentificate connection" option checked in Preferences -> Security tab does interfere with Inkscape launch. Uncheck it if Inkscape doesn't launch.

OR

1. Open Terminal.app (in Applications -> Utilities) and type the following

2. mkdir ~/.fontconfig

3.Hit return

4. Then I re-downloaded inkscape and opened it.

OS X.5.4
Xquartz 2.2.3

Oh my...I am SO THANKFUL you turned me on to Inkscape. I created star shaped text this morning, exported it as a .png and opened it in PSE. Worked perfectly. What great fun this will make in my digi scrapping. Thank you so much!!
