My Personal History Daily Question #17   (2 comments, 87 views) Sunday, 23 July 2006

Question: What was your first car?

My first car was a 1960 black and white Chevrolet Malibu.  It was an ugly little car and I got it in 1971, so it was already old.  It was in good condition though.  A retired farmer had it and it didn't have very many miles on it.  It had always been kept in a garage, so it was dependable.  It wasn't the car that was special, but the way I ended up with it . . .

On my 13th birthday, my mom and dad -- (this was my mom's idea!) -- gave me $100 in a savings account.  They let me look at the little book it was recorded in.  That's it.  That's all I got for my birthday.  "THAT'S ALL", you say????  Well, to a 13 year old, I'd rather have gotten new clothes or shoes or barretts for my hair, or makeup that I had just started experimenting with, or some cool music.  But . . . you guessed it . . . that's how I got my first car at age 19 when I got a job about 20 miles from home.  I paid $125 for that car in 1971.

I'm going through that with my dd now. If you gets a gift card, it's ok. If it goes in her savings account, she always says "That's it? That's my gift?" She will realize in due time how valuable it really is.

My first car was a gift - my brother in law got it for me from a DAV (thrift store). I am not sure how much he paid for it, I am thinking about a $100,

It was a black Reualt - it looked like the cabs they drive in England, very small. I loved that car! The engine was in the back. I would save pop bottles and sell them to buy gas (then $.35 would get you a gallon! (God I am old.... lol)

Once in awhile when I would come to a stop the car wouldn't start. I would have to get out and "burp" the air out of the gas line on the engine.... Everyone would be honking at me but I would just get out and do it, get back in and go.

When I got married my husband and I traded it in on a yellow fast-back mustang - now there is a car I would like to have now.... we thought we were something in that little piece of heaven! ha
