My Personal History Daily Question #18   (4 comments, 90 views) Wednesday, 26 July 2006

Question: Did you have a childhood hideout? Tell about it.

High In The Sky

My childhood backyard was a great place to play.  We had a walkout basement that walked out onto a big concrete patio. We had a long grassy area that sloped downward and was a great place to go sledding in the winter. At the bottom of the slope was my dad's huge garden that spanned the entire width of our lot and it was level.

Before the lot went into it's slope on the south end of the lot was a huge weeping willow tree. (If you read my blog about getting into trouble, this was the tree my dad cut the branch from to whip my butt.)  It was a beautiful tree with it's branches bending toward the ground.  The trunk was big and the first limb that branched off the trunk had a good 2 feet diameter (it seemed bigger than that when I was young, but it was probably about 2 feet).  The limb went straight out horizontally about 4 feet, then turned upward toward the sky.  It was a big comfortable throne in the sky and it was MY place.  When I wanted to be alone to read or think, I climbed that tree to my big throne chair.  I'm sure my parents could see me from the kitchen window or the basement window, but I never mentioned it and neither did they.

My willow throne is a very good memory that I had forgotten until this question was presented to me.  Thank you!

Oh how neat, I am so in envy. I adore willows and that sounds just magical. I love your throne chair in the willow!

Thanks for sharing!

I had huge pine trees in the yard and the branches touched the ground but it was all hollow inside by the trunk...I used to play house in there and lay in there and read and if I was mad at my mom I would go in there with my dog and tell her all my problems...Every child should have a special spot like that.

What is it with girls and trees? I thought I was the only one.

We lived in a mobile home park when I was a kid, with a large church beside us. Behind the church was a double row of trees - they made a arch like path through them. I would go there, climb up into a tree and watch everything going on, or read a book or write in my diary. Anywhere to get away from my sister! I loved those trees, they were my secret get away!

When I was younger still I would play under our trailer (opps mobile home), with my cars. No one bothered me there either. I made up cities with roads, popcicle sticks and what ever else I could find to fill it in. I loved playing under there.
