Estee's Take: I {Heart} the Internet

When I was a freshman in high school, my family signed up AOL. It seemed downright magical because it brought the internet into our house with those three glorious words, “You’ve got mail!” I can remember coming home from school and checking my email, of which there would be none because the only people who would send me email had been in school with me all day. Once that task was completed, I would sit there and try to think of something else I could do online. Inevitably I would sign off and wander upstairs to start my homework, unable to justify playing solitaire. My family and I would joke about it, deciding that this whole internet thing is just a phase and that it really isn’t going to catch on. Yeah. So much for that thoughtful insight.
Now I panic if my internet isn‘t working. I sit and tap my fingers and make deals with my computer in return for the internet resuming. I make empty promises of no more diet Pepsi within arms length of the keyboard of my laptop or a guarantee of shut down at bedtime. I promise to change the screensaver to something more entertaining than those ridiculous bubbles and pledge that I will buy a new fancy cordless mouse for the desktop computer. As I contemplate calling my internet service provider and demanding to know what is going on I can’t help but think, how did I survive before the internet?
There are so many things that I use the internet for, I would be lost without it now. I can’t imagine having to go to a new doctor, taking a road trip or figuring out a detour around construction without MapQuest. How did people even get anywhere without it? I have to admit that it isn’t always reliable. My mom and I spent one very aggravating afternoon trying to decipher directions to a pumpkin patch about an hour away. I ended up having to pull an old school move by asking for directions at a gas station. The lady restocking the beef jerky knew what I was talking about and told me to drive until I saw a sign for the local fire station and then make a left turn at the large oak tree. Awesome.
Brad makes fun of me all the time for my “internet acquired” knowledge. I am absolutely ridiculous when it comes to Googling symptoms. When I was pregnant, this was my worst enemy. I had Preeclampsia with all three pregnancies and would drive Brad crazy with my, “Yeah, but the internet says…” stories. Brad has since imposed an immediate three day moratorium on internet usage after any kind of diagnosis or any sudden weird symptom. I guess my Google Medical Degree will be taking a break for a while. I am sure that the kids’ pediatrician will be thrilled.
I like to think that the internet has made my life better. I pay all of my bills online, find new recipes online, shop online and post pictures on my blog so my family can be amazed by my quickly growing children. Since I have no local scrapbook stores, I buy all of my scrapbook supplies online. An added bonus of buying scrapbooking supplies at Scrapbook.com was the message boards here. I never imagined finding a whole website full of people who are interested in the same things that I am. I have made some amazing friends here. Patrizzia was my very first friend here. I still smile when I get an email saying she has added a new image to her gallery. It has been so much fun watching her daughter grow!
I have lots of people who I regularly stalk their galleries, such as Cheryljunegirl, TessaAnn, Queen_of_Paper, Luuuuv2scrap, Toofclnr, Emilie Ahern, PEIgirl and Momarazzi, to name just a very few. I find daily inspiration from these special ladies and there are always some amazing new layouts in the gallery for me to be in love with. Just this morning I found these three layouts that I think are amazing: Summer School by Carbphrek, Fast Car by Aimee Ann and 1984 by Jeniece.
I have been here for almost 3 years and I never imagined how important Scrapbook.com would be for me. I am grateful for a space where I can share layouts, ideas and fun stories with a group of people who truly understand. What in the world did we do before the internet?
That’s my take this week! What’s yours? What did you do before the internet? Are there things that you can’t live without online? And just because I am always in search of new amazing talent, let’s hear the names of your favorite Scrapbook.com neighbors! Whose gallery do you stalk? Leave a comment here listing your favorite artist(s) and I will choose one winner who will receive a $20.00 gift certificate to the Scrapbook.com Superstore!!
AND don’t forget that there is one more week left in the “Brand New” June Contest!! Upload those layouts!

Well, internet is a must for sure. I've had some really weird issues with my computer lately and I totally panic at the thought of losing this often taken for granted priviledge. Isn't it such a hassle to think of trying to do ANYTHING without it? Yikes!
I've met some amazing & highly talented people here..... the growing friends list is such a bonus! I'm in awe of so many that I'd probably take quite a bit of room to list those galleries that I lurk through. LOL! Great blog, I'll have to check out some of those you mentioned that I haven't seen yet. : )

I don't remember life without internet. I've had internet since 1995. I'm really addicted to my critique groups here at sb.com and cannot have a day without at least reading the new posts. I also love Google Reader that allows me to read all the new entries at my favourite blogs without visiting them one by one.
My favourite artists here are Kelly Goree, Beebuzz and Emile Ahern.

OH,,, I am sooo bad if the net isn't working!! I check all the conections, then unplug, wait 5 minutes, replug the wireless in and if it still don't work, you know my isp is getting a call from me! And I only got high speed last year, the dial up was a slow nightmare! But I still uploaded images here.
I am amazed at how fast I have become addicted to the internet! Now if I don't sit down with my coffee at the computer to check my mail and sb.com in the morning,, well my day just doesn't start right! And my hubby keeps threatening to shut the net off,, when he gets tired of me typing away and ignoring him,,,lol,,,
My favorite artist, Ann Marie, Gabriellep, Spend2much, and many many more!! There is sooo much talent here!

I use the internet for SO many things! I am a SAHM, so the internet is kind of a link to the outside world for me :) Also, I don't know scrappers in real life, so the internet helps me get my scrapbooking fix! I, too, am one of those "Let's look it up on the internet" kind of people. It's just so easy to find out almost anything you want to know!
Some of my fave scrappers: retrojulie, Kay Daniels, Zoa, etc...there are just so many!

Before the internet I was a major book nerd! I always carried around 3-4 books and had books in every place. I was a big magazine collector too. I agree with you about Aimee Ann; I knew her from another site before I saw her here at scrapbook.com & she's sooo creative & FUN! I lurk around too and some of my favorites are jamieharper, aimee ann, colleenak, Jenniwren32 and stephanie garbett...

Livn4change and I have a lot in common. I too am a SAHM, do not know any scrappers in real life and is always looking up something on the internet. Without it I would feel incredibly disconnected from the world. Thank you Al Gore for inventing my life line (LOL)!!
Please check out my scrapbook.com buddy Shihtzu452. Her layouts are so vibrant and fun. I love her work!

I'm sure I got alot more things done around the house before the internet;) When I first "discovered" sb.com (thanks to my sis) I spent countless hours on here. I literally could not walk away from my seat. Now it is still part of my daily "routine". Check my PMs, check the threads and the new LOs in the gallery.
I have made some very good friends here. We have not met in person, but I consider them to be some of my closet friends; MsAngelasScraps and Lexiandlukesmom. One of my first friends here was LakeshoreLady:)
Never in my life did I imagine that I could meet people who would come to mean so much to me over the internet.
At one point, I had an online job writing kids birthday party ideas for a party site. Through this "job" I came to meet two other women whom I became very good friends with as well. One I lost touch with and then found again after a year or so. The other I've remained friends with for a couple of years now. We chat on an almost daily basis and have exchanged phone calls.
I don't do alot of online shopping, but it's good to know that I can. I use the movies, music and map quest the most. Oh, and looking up local phone numbers. I don't even own a phone book anymore:)
Some of my fave galleries on here are: Kelly Goree, Robinzberdz and PEI girl:)

Life before internet
I was on the phone. I just went from one addiction to another. I use to come home from work put my fanny pack on, clip the cordless phone to in, connect the head set to the phone and put the head set on. So when some one called I could walk around and do what ever on the phone. I would watch movies together with my friends on the phone. Some times I would be on the phone so long that the batteries would go low on one cordless and I would have to put it in the charger and get the other one. I have even had on some Saturdays have had the second cordless batteries go low and have to get the first cordless after it charged.
Now I can talk on the phone type emails while having conversations with two to three people on IM and post pics on SB.com. My DH gets very nerves when the internet is not work right. I can go with out TV and now I am not on the phone as much. But let the computer go on the fritz, not a pretty picture.
I have just getting to the point of visiting my friends place just to look at their gallery. Some of the people that I do visit are Emilie Aherin, Jax67, TanishaRenee, Scrap Evangel, Tiphini and you.
I am very bad with visiting my neighbors, but I am starting to get a little better.
The ones that I seem to leave the most comment to would be Chuewanita, MommyK and Scrapping Vickie. I am starting to get pretty good with at least posting a comment to the neighbors that have left me a comment with in a week.
My next step is to start post more comment in people’s galleries. I also what to start entering more contests on SB.com. While I am posting and entering contest I need to balance my time to scrap. Oh, and while I am doing all of this I plan to learn how to do digital scrap booking.

Ever since the internet came to my house... I don't even watch TV anymore. I love the internet. LOL My favorite artists here are... MindyRadio (she's got my same warped sense of humor), BreweryGirlMel (she uses embellies like I want to when I grow up), IngridG (her pages are so pretty!), Mom2CamiandReese (she's got a fabulously funky style!), and ~{Puppet}~ (love her doodling!).

I, too, use the internet for my medical degree! And now my dd does that too...looking up symptoms herself! I remember our first computer and our first internet connection was sooo slow. Now I freak out if I can't get the info I want fast enough!
Now I have a new addiction...sb.com. I love the galleries of Gabriellep, Pammy, Robinberdz, Alteredgeisha and Retrojulie.
I am sooo addicted that I am leaving for vacation tomorrow and when my ds told me last week that his laptop was not working I ran out the door to the UPS Store and sent it to the repair facility as soon as humanly possible. Now I have to wait for Fedex to bring it back to me...delivery tomorrow....what time? who knows. All I know is that I can't leave for vacation without it because I have 2 swap/games to play on sb.com while on vacation! If that isn't addiction, I don't know what is!

I blame the internet for my lack of interest in reading books :). Before the internet, I used to always have books lying around everywhere to read. To my defense, I still read on the net too :)
As for favorite artists, that's hard to choose, but here are some to name a few: Thecircleguru, {Jeniece}, Elizabeth Carney, Nicoleeshelman, Heather Keller, TessaAnn, ~{Puppet}~, and the list can go on and on...

OMG...It absolutely KILLS me when the internet doesn't work. I feel like I can't function. Since I work from home, if I can't get online I have no way of doing work...which sometimes isn't a bad thing ;) Also, I find it very hard to be without internet when I go on vacation. Since I use the internet as my primary news source, local tv station sites and cnn, I feel like I miss so much going on in the world.
I do absolutely love this site and looking at everyone's galleries and blogs. Sometimes when I'm bored (and probably should be doing work) I will just stroll through the gallery. And, if there is a particular layout I like, I will visit that person's site and look at their gallery some more. So, I'm kind of addicted to everyone!

Looooooooove the internet...it is the first thing that I do when I wake up in the morning and the last thing when I go to bed at night! I have gone from one addiction...watching TV...to another!!! My husband is the one who introduced me to the internet back in 1998...his family had AOL, and we had never ever heard of it...actually, I think we had just barely gotten a computer, we didn't have one up to that point! We were old school! LOL!!! Now I can't imagine my life without it!!!
My favorite artists are....PEIgirl, J.Devoe, Ginger Williams, and YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I totally love the internet. I remember when we got it and at first it wasn't really much fun and was pretty well used only for schoolwork. Then we got everyone in the family who had internet hooked up with emails. Then I found ICQ (which, ironically, I haven't had in years and switched out for AIM) and would spend hours talking to random people, listening to the "uh-oh" sound it made every time a message was received. Now, I'm an addict, and I can't help but say that scrapbook.com helped me get this way, along with a DH who is away for weeks at a time for work with more accessible internet than phone access. Being online is the first thing I do in the morning, the last I do at night, and something that occurs all throughout the day.
My favorites around here: Scrapperlicious, TesaB, Thorbsa, StrawberryPia, Robinxberdz, and Hannacat

Might I just mention - "wireless" internet....I'm beyond loving it! I'm obsessed with it! I carry my laptop all over the house so that I can check email, bank balances, look up movies, anything and everything! Not to mention clocking a LOT of hours on SB.C!! I have to confess, I even take it with me by the pool while the grandkids are swimming. ;0) And since I'm a "little" older than ya'll, I remember when dial up was slower than walking to the neighbors to find something out!! ROFL It's funny because we now have fios and I still get impatient with it...and try to remember back to the OLD DAYS and bide my time!
As far as favorite artists, there really are too many to mention but I guess some of my all time favorites are Gabriellep, Robinzberdz, 2dogs, Anderjackie, Luzma and then my chatting buddies BJScrapsalot & harleybunny 100.
I've only been on this site for a while but have gained SO MUCH - thanks to ALL of you!

I can't imagine life with no internet! I work full time and if I didn't have access to the internet here at work, I think I'd lose my mind. sb.com and the friends I'm making here help me from having scrapbooking withdrawals during the long hours not being able to "create".
I haven't had a chance to stalk many galleries yet, but the few I have looked at are all awesome. So much talent on one website!
Keep up the good work, Estee, I love your blogs!
Love my online friends!
