Crocheted flowers make great embellishments. Of course, it is possible to buy them, but if you know how to crochet, then it is easy to make your own. The advantage of making your own is that you can choose the color to exactly match your project.

You can use any size yarn with the appropriate size hook (for the yarn). Thin yarn and a small hook will make a small flower which is better for scrapbook projects. However, if you do not crochet frequently, a medium yard and hook ( approximately size F or G) is the easiest to work with.

Detailed instructions:

The flower will consist of a chain circle, followed by 2 rows. Each row will go all the way around the circle.

Start by making a slip knot in the yarn and putting around the hook. Then make 5 chain stitches. A chain stitch is made by wrapping the yarn over the hook and pulling it through the loop which is already on the hook.

Next make a slip stitch into the first stitch of the chain. This is done by sticking the hook through the first stitch at the beginning of the chain. There will now be 2 stitches around the hook. Wrap the yarn around the hook and pull it through both stitches on the hook. You will now have a tiny little circle.

First row:

Do 6 more chain stitches, you will now have a lollipop shape.

Now you will need to do a double crochet into the center of the flower, this is toughest stitch of the whole flower. Wrap the yarn around the hook, then poke the hook through the center circle (from the front), wrap the yarn around the hook again and bring the hook back up from the center of the circle. There should now be 3 loops around the hook. Wrap the yarn around the hook and pull it through 2 of the loops. There should now be 2 loops on the hook. Wrap the yarn around the hook and pull through both loops. Once again, there will be one loop on the hook.

You will do this next step 4 times: Chain 3 and do a double crochet into the center of the flower.

Chain 3 more and do a slip stitch into the third chain from the chain 6 at the beginning of the row. If you are not sure how to do this slip stitch, lay your project on the table and look for the center of the flower, you can bend that chain into a corner. You want to stick the hook right into the corner stitch. Then wrap the yarn over the hook and pull it through both stitches.

Second row:

You should now have a little circle with 6 sections. For the next row, you will make 6 petals, each petal will be made into one section of the first row and each petal is exactly the same.

Do 1 chain stitch, now do 3 double crochet stitches into the hole in the first row. All 3 stitches will be made into the same hole. Do one more chain, then do a slip stitch into the top of the double crochet from the first row.

Do this 5 more times, until you have 6 petals and have gone all the way around the circle. It should look like a flower.

To finish it off, cut the yarn about 2 inches from the flower. Wrap the yarn over the hook and pull through the stitch on the hook; pull all the way through so there are no stitches on the hook and give it a little tug. It should feel tight. Turn the flower over the weave both ends into the back, then cut them short so they don't show.  Be careful not to cut them so short that they unravel.

When you are done, the finished flower should look like this:

Quick instructions:

Chain 5 and slip stitch into the first stitch to make a circle.

First row:
Chain 6, double crochet into the center of the circle.
*chain 3 and double crochet into center of circle * 4 times
chain 3 and slip stitch into third chain

(You should now have 6 holes around the center)
Second row:
*chain 1, 3 double crochet into hole, chain 1, slip stitch into top of double crochet* 6 times
