My family all loves to eat good food, so everyone in my family learns to cook at an early age. My mother is an excellent cook and used to do catering for small parties in her spare time. I remember growing up all of our relatives, friends and neighbors coming for dinner and ooohing and ahhhing over my mother's cooking. Her quiches, her lasagne, her huge holiday meals, everyone always left happy. My mother taught me to cook and I like to think I do it well. Most of my friends jump at the opportunity to have me cook something for them, and often make requests when we have pot lucks. All of my children are learning to cook and do quite well.
My grandmother sews and crochets. Neither of these skills were passed to my mother and therefore not to me. My mother knits, but it was only 1 1/2 years ago that I learned. I guess at some time these talents were deemed not quite as important.
Why was cooking determined to be the skill to pass down? It is more than just a way to nourish our bodies, it is also a way to bring families and friends together. A way to share the blessings in our lives.
