The flash on one of my beloved, in fact my most beloved Sony Cybershots has died. The daytime stuff is still great but the flash is kaput. And its my favorite Sony camera.
I was shopping today and none of the Sony camera's really did much for me.
Then the salesman showed me the Power Shot SX40HS Digital. I think this could be even more beloved than my SOny.
Anyone else have this one or know anything about it? I have to make up my mind quickly - we are leaving town on Tuesday and I need a second camera so Bill and I each have one, - plus it gives us a back up if one dies or jumps in the ocean or has another problem.
I've learned to never travel with just one camera!
So what do you think of this Canon for a new toy?

I don't know this model, but I've loved both of the Canons I've owned, one of which was a PowerShot. Although I try not to use the flash if I can help it (I really need to get a Speedlite or a least a decent diffuser ).

I also have the Nikon Coolpix S8100 and love it. Use it more than my Nikon D5100.

I haven't had a canon in forever so sorry I can't help you with that. I do know when I was choosing my last camera I did a lot of research and I've stuck with either my Nikon coolpix or for my larger camera I have a Fujifilm (forget the model number) because since I got the Nikon I never use it - my Nikon does everything my Fuji does

I highly recommend the Canon Power Shot SD1300IS. It's all I use and it takes wonderful pictures. It's capable of so much and very easy to use. Mine was a gift from my daughter a couple of years ago and I keep it in constant use. My son bought me a tripod for it so I can use it for time lapse photos at night. It's lightweight, the battery last forever and well, what can I say. I would buy another if anything ever happened to this one.

I like this site for camera reviews: http://www.dpreview.com/products/canon/compac ts/canon_s...
In my experience you can't go wrong with a Canon. I own several and have never been disapointed. The camera you're looking into got good reviews (4.73)
Good luck and enjoy!

I had a Canon Power Shot???? and loved it. Now I have a Canon Power Shot SX120is and HATE it.
Why do they have to change things and make so meny models that you don't know what you are buying.
I would love to get a new camera but I usually just leave the stores with a skull cramp.

Research research research!
It is sooooo overwhelming to sort thru all the different makes and models. What I usually do is first figure out what I want in a camera...what features are most important. Then I narrow it down to a few models and research the reviews
I've never been disapointed with any of my purchases

One thing I really like about this one - when you want to take a flash you manually just pop up the flash thing and it takes. No settings or anything to re-do or adjust.
I have to go into settings or press buttons on both of our cameras to set flash. This is so simple - if its up, it flashes, if its not up, it doesn't flash.
For night where you don't wnat to use the flash there is an option where you can change it to low light.
This one just seems the easiest to operate. A bit bulkier than I wanted but that is okay. I like that I can just lift the little thing to take a flash picture.
Bill hands me the current one constantly and asks me, "WIll you set the flash"?
The other one - well I mess with the buttons constantly and sometimes I get the flash right and sometimes I don't. SOmetimes it surprises me when it goes off and sometimes I loose pictures becuase I haven't gotten to the flash quick enough.
THis also does the burst of 8 fast photos in high resolution. My old Sony did sports flashes real fast but the resolution was never as good.
Most cameras that do the fast sports shooting does not have a real good resolution and this does but its limited to 8 at a time.
That's enough for good whale shots.

I have 2 Canon cameras and I love them both. The one I got first was a PowerShot S3 IS. Love it...it takes good pictures, but I don't use it as much since I got my Canon Rebel T3i.
So...did ya end up getting it?

I just googled the camera...it looks a lot like my S3. It is a little bulkier than most point & shoots, but I think that's why I liked it...it has more options than the average camera.

I got it about an hour ago. Tonight I want to make time to play with it and try to figure it out. I have an old camera case I need to look for in a few minutes to see if it fits. I ordered a spare battery from Amazon becuase I can't find them anywhere in Ocala. Not even where I bought the camera.

I have played with it and it is perfect to me. COmplicated enough that I can keep learning and easy enough that I have no problem using it now.
We are leaving on vacation today and its going to get a workout. I've mastered the basics and that is all I need to know, but I would love to take a class to find out what else it does!

I am so with you there! I have played and played (averaging about 500 pics a month since March) but I would love to learn how to really use it! I've joined a group on flickr with the same camera and it's amazing what it can do.
Have a wonderful vacation and happy shooting!

I'm anxious to play with mine more. We are in Pensacola so maybe there will be pictures to take on the road. We will be travelling for about 6 weeks so it will get plenty of use. A week of our trip will be a cruise to Alaska and I want to really be comfortable with the camera before then so I can get the best Alaska pictures.
Should come home with tons of pictures!

I use this as well and absolutely love it. I have had multiple canon cameras... I tried a few other brands in between and have always been disappointed in how slow they were compared to my canons.

Perhaps look at the Nikon Coolpix?
I love Nikon and I love me Panasonic FZ45 but thats a full size camera. The Nikon is a small pocket camera. Nikon is known for its quality.
