You take one thing, and lay something else on top of it.

there's no right and no wrong,,,,do what you think looks good. If you want to mix patterns, one "trick" is to use paper pads,,,,,the colors and patterns usually "go" together quite well.

Here's a video on mixing patterned papers:

If that's still too hard, go with Holly's advice and stick with one manufacturer's line, so they all coordinate.

Thank you for posting that Linda. I have a terrible time mixing patterned papers - I feel my layouts are really boring compared to those who do play with different papers on a page!

To add to the already great suggestions.....just cruise the gallery. There are plenty of visual examples of layering, plus most any other technique you could ask about.

Ok, that was not only a stupid answer but insulting as well.

I was going to ask a question of you guys but this sounds like nothing more than a bunch of rude ol' ladies. I can get this kind of help at my local Michaels. I'm heading out right now for some really helpful answers. Have a nice day ladies.

I've been playing with layering today and not having much luck but it doesn't seem to go with my pages I'm doing. Golden gate Bridge, Ghiradelli Square and Haigh Ashbury. I have papers and things that won't work. For Haight Ashbury I have expensive tie-dyed paper and I want to show as much as possible and for Ghiradelli I'm using our plastic shopping bag. I had San Francisco papers for San Francisco so maybe ont he next batch I can start layer a bit. I really want to learn to do it.
That video posted above helped me get an idea what to look for when layering.
My next layout is Lake Tahoe - just a big scenic picture of the lake and I just want to emphasize the photo so won't use layering.
Then Utah and those are scenic with a lot of pictures on a page.
I think that is why I'm having trouble layering. I use so many pictures on each page or else I use a really large picture.
Lots of Haight Ashbury research to do tonight.
Would love to get these pages made into kits so I can put them aside for crop next Saturday (not tomorrow).

I think Aaronsmommywoman (what kind of name is THAT?) was refering to my post.
Hey Aarons mom- get a sense of humour!

Even so, I didn't think that your post was meant in a rude way at all. Perhaps people should actually participate and get a feel of a forum before they act out and get huffy. We're a pretty fun-loving group and we like to be silly and have fun!
And she said rude ladies...so I'm guessing she thought everyone's answer here was stupid and rude. Whatever!

well geez, let's TALK about rude,,,,,
I do believe that amanda meant that layering is rather simple,,,,,sometimes we try and make things harder than they are,,,,,that there's no right and no wrong.
Just jump down her throat why don't you?????????

Well, I admit that my post was a little cheeky. But it was meant to be funny, and not mean spirited at all. What I meant was, yes, layering is as simple as putting one piece of paper on another. There are no rules, just do whatever looks good to you.

Amanda's post made me laugh, and it appears that the OP got a laugh out of it to.

My only question is - how did she know I was a little ol' lady?
