Our local newspaper featured a photo essay of "then and now" photos.

"View looking west of the Steel Bridge. Similar angel to historic photo of bridge..."

Last week I saw a BIG vinyl sign along a main road for a fruit stand:

"Berries, vegtables, fruit..."

This was a HUGE professionally printed sign--not some handwritten-on-cardboard job.
You'd think if VEGETABLES were your business, you'd know how to spell it, or at least the sign-maker would have caught it!

Email just received from someone in the bank's mortgage department confirming the: "...Principle and interest amount."

SERIOUSLY?!
YOU. WORK. IN. THE. MORTGAGE. DEPARTMENT!!!
These are terms you presumably deal with EVERY DAY!

I sense an subliminal cry for freedom from that employee. Money-lending and principles don't often mix well.

Although principal and interest is what she deals with, apparently spelling is NOT one of her principal duties.

I feel I cannot adequately express my disappointment and annoyance at this one. I thought my friends here would understand.

An email from our school about registration:

"For convenience, if you have one or more students in different grades you are more then welcome to send them to one of the scheduled dates above.

Students will be having there school photos taken at registration. Please have them wear school appropriate attire this day."

Again.... this. is. from. THE. SCHOOL!!!!!

And not just one but TWO errors.

This would have been my reply: "I will not be registering any child at a school where its staff does not know Grammar 101: when to use they're/there/their and than/then."

I can't believe this was composed and sent from a school!

What were they thinking?

Never mind - I guess they weren't.

Linda, that's horrible. I have a friend who is an 'educator' and has responded to an email with 'histerical!' Ironic that my original email wasn't as funny as her response.

It should be unbelievable, but not in this day and age....

Poor Linda. I'm sure you got the same physical pain as I did.

Exactly!

It doesn't matter, but this is the HIGH SCHOOL! I showed the email to my daughter (senior this year), and she caught the errors.

I do want to respond and point out the errors, but I'm not able to compose anything so far that isn't too snarky or uppity.

My first drafts:

"Are you kidding me?! Seriously? Did a 4th grade student volunteer write this?"

"I didn't think anything could be worse THAN my daughter's summer homework, THEN I saw this email."

"I assume the computers, there at the school, have spell check, so the staff can check their messages."

Suggestions?

I am sure most people (school district included) would say there are more important school issues to worry about than the spelling and grammar of the staff.

Pointing it out would undoubtedly make me look like some OCD word nerd grammar nazi.

I would take the paper, put a big red "F" on it and circle the mistakes in red.

Then note that the letter or memo received a failing grade because of grammatical and spelling errors and mail it directly to the principal marked "personal".

But that is just me.

But if you did that, I don't think you would receive any more memos or letters from the school with mistakes like this. Someone would start proofing them!

Good gravy!!! I cannot believe that memo came from a school!!!!!!!!!! I would actually have second thoughts in allowing my children to attend THERE!!

I like Henri's idea!! Why are we considered OCD because we catch errors and want to bring it to THEIR attention??? especially a school! They need to be told!
