for a way to make "mud" paper, any ideas? I have some pics of DS playing in the mud

Maybe black cardstock with brown ink on top would work. Or maybe you could use dark brown cardstock with a slightly lighter brown ink. Good luck! Show us what you come up with!

I think a coat of crackle paint over some of the elements or paper would work well. It could look like dried mud if you used one of the brown ones.

I just used plain ol' acrylic paint, like Duncan or that brand you can buy at Wal-Mart. I put just a bit of water in it and then flicked the paint on with a paint brush.

brown paint smudged onto ghost shapes makes pretty cool mud! Looks just like muddy fingerprints and smears.

A lady here at the LSS made a layout with mud tracks for dirtbiking. She made the tracks from mixing brown paint with UTEE Pebbles and it came out awesome.
