I have posted this before, but I know that there are always new people coming on here, so I wanted to share it again. I hope no one is getting tired of me sharing this, but the children at this camp are so close to my heart, i just want to share it with everyone.
last year i asked for help from people here on sb.com in a project i was working on. i had a tremendous response, and i am working on the project again for next year. so i am posting this again, for all the new people who may not have heard about it, or anyone else who might want to help.
my family volunteers at a camp called Royal Family Kids Camp (RFKC), that is a camp for battered, abused and neglected children. each year at camp, the campers receive cards from their counselors, and other staff members. last year, i decided it would be great if we could have handmade cards for the campers, so after asking for help here, and with ones i made, we received almost 1,000 cards for the 2009 camp. the campers loved it, and would be found at night, admiring their cards, and couldn't believe that people who didn't even know them, would take the time to make cards for them.
The cards need to be 3x5 or smaller, to fit in the camp mailbox. we do not need envelopes. you can make them any sort of theme for boy or girl, or ones that can be made for either. sports, animals, flowers, characters, birthday, are all good themes. you can also use encouraging, affirming words or phrases, such as awesome, you are special, you rock...you get the idea. also, if you would sign in a small corner on the back, your name or screen name, the kids love seeing who made their cards. you can also check out the camp on the camp website, the camp we do is for the Clayton County, Ga camp. www.rfkc.org

I've signed up to help you, and I've drawn a few kids I know into the project. This too is a cause very close to my heart. I'm an adult survivor of child abuse. And this past week I had my birth mother, one of my abusers, in my home so she could see a cardiologist. Needless to say I didn't get much sleep due to my own children and ensuring their safety. A part of me loves my mother simply because she's my mother, but another part of me can't stand her. I finially had to make her leave my home because she kept insisting on bringing up my past abuse and then swearing to me that it never happened, and she was the perfect mother, etc. Emotionally I couldn't take it and was on the verge of an emotional break down, thus she had to GO!
Let me just say, unless you have lived with this type of abuse, you do not know how important and special these cards are to these kids. These kids NEED to know that someone, somewhere thinks their special. And they need to know that someone thinks about them, and cares about them. They also need to be encouraged and uplifted due to the emotional and psychological toll that abuse has taken on their self-esteem.
