I see these used in some of the demos to protect your work surface especially against heat from a heat tool or hot melt pot.

I was wondering if a silicone baking sheet would do the job. My only concern would be if the silicone sheet would stain. Any thoughts?

Silicone sheets work just fine.

I wouldn't keep it isolated for craft use only, I wouldn't want to use it for food. And I wouldn't worry about any staining - you may get some staining with certain inks, but it won't affect the performance.

I use (and love!) my ranger craft sheet when I'm cropping away from home, but at home, I keep a non stick oven liner on my work table. It has the same properties as the ranger sheet, but its a little thicker, a little larger, and its black so it always looks clean.

I have the Ranger one and the kitchen silicone one. The kitchen one is thicker but I don't want to stain it. I use it for baking.

I have both the Ranger and the Bazzill 6x6 mats. The silicone mat for the kitchen is probably just as good. I can't compare since the only silicone mat I've got is a cookie sheet which I use for that purpose. The craft mats are very thin - about the width of a sheet of paper/cardstock. Whatever you decide, I suggest you only use that item for crafting so there's no chance of contaminating your food...

I have a quilters mat down on my table, it is stained a little but I don't really care-- I use the Ranger mat for messy things and it is great, just wipes clean. I have some silicone ones I used before I got my Ranger one-- They work fine, too.
