I just got a Golf magazine in the mail, addressed to me.
I've NEVER played golf in my life.

While I agree if you're not involved in criminal activity, it shouldn't matter who knows what kind of toilet paper you buy. But it still bothers me a little. As Gelidy explained, it's more than just a single store tracking my purchases so it can keep *my* brand in stock.

It seems now that it is EVERY store (not just the grocery store).

Wow. When it is taken to that extent, I agree completely.

We don't get that in the UK. Actually when you sign up for loyalty programs here, there is a box to check if you don't want to have things mailed to you. I always check that box, and if I can't find one, I ask. I don't agree with junk mail.

We don't have the coupon culture here either. I think things are much easier!

Big Brother
I'm looking at some interesting sales results for convenience stores along with a bunch of boring stuff about purchasing habits and the price of gasoline.
What people buy at convenience stores by $$$...
Tobacco - the clear winner at 32.99%!
Lottery tickets - interesting 18%!
Refreshments (non-alcoholic) 16.17%
Prepared food – somebody does buy those day old hot dogs 8.24%
Snacks – 7.91%
Beer - 6.23%
ALL Other - 10.46%

The interesting thing is tobacco. It may not seem like it but people are still smoking a lot! Convenience store tobacco sales Jan – Jun 2012 $26,530,000! That’s 26 million dollars in sales in 6 months at convenience stores. This is not even including other types of stores.

I believe it. When I smoked (will be 4 years smoke free in February) I bought cigarettes at the convenience store. And that's the only thing I bought there.

I decided to wage my own personal protest against store cards required to get the best price.

Last night I went to buy M&Ms for baking.

Rite Aid had bags for $2.99. Got the checkout, rings up $4.29. "NO, I don't want to pay $4.29." Just enter your phone number.
"No. I don't want to do that."

I was half expecting the clerk to somehow give me the discounted price. NOPE.
I walked out without buying anything.

Went to Walgreens. Same thing. Sorry. You have to have our card to get the 2/$5 price.

REALLY?!
Over 40% higher price without the store card?!
I would think that stores would rather make a sale, than have customers walk out.

I realize I am probably alone in this crusade, as most people seem to not be bothered by it.

I firmly believe that more consumers need to "vote" with their money. If you don't like a store or its policies, don't shop there.

A followup to my rant above;

The price displayed was "$2.99 with card." "With card" was in very fine print.

It was NOT obvious or clear what the price is WITHOUT the card.

And I looked carefully at the display at Walgreens, and it didn't even say "with card."

To me, that's deceptive and unfair.

I hate those cards. Hate them! I don't want to carry cards around, sign up for stuff, or keep track of what rewards I am due IF I claim them. I'm not thrilled about the "big brother" aspect, either.

I agree exactly!

My BIG complaint is the difference in price. I don't mind an optional card that gives some benefit to frequent shoppers.

I don't like that you pay MORE if you don't have the card.

I just refuse.

But wasn't theirs just some reward or benefit after spending so much?
