week five of You in 52- "Whose life have you influenced outside your immediate family?" Being a teacher, of course I immediately thought of my students. I rephotographed some of their pics to resize them to use within my LO. Again, I hid my journaling behind the photo(because I write too much!) and it says" As I near retirement, I have been thinking often of my former students, how they are doing, what they are doing, whether they remember their time in my classroom. Many of their senior pictures have been taped to my office window, edges now curled with time, each with faded but treasured comments hand written on the back. This week I took them down and read them. I opened my files and read the many notes I’ve received over the years, and tears came to my eyes. I love those kids as if they were my own., because, hey, for 4 years they WERE my kids. I watched them come in as hyper, off-the-wall freshmen and grow to be wonderful, mature young adults. Some of them were in my room 3-4 hours a day and we used to joke about putting a cot in my room so they could just move in. They called themselves the art geeks. Today, there are several art teachers among them, several graphic designers, a couple commercial artists, a textile designer, a fashion designer, a sculptor, a few potters, a couple with their own galleries, a couple getting their graduate degrees in fine arts. And those are just the ones I know about. I’m so proud of them all. These are the faces that reflect such a large part of my life - we laughed, we cried, we had a lot of fun. We worked and studied hard. Most of them are grown up now, but in my mind they are still 18 years old and full of life, for memories are a powerful part of who we are, and I’m so proud they are a part of mine."
