Here's my Ugly Papers, courtesy of laurak1, who even though she thought she was being mean, had no idea that I had the perfect photographs and sketch all lined up to make these papers and embellishment work to my advantage.

Here's the story - which you KNOW there is one, right?

Several weeks ago, the middle of the night - seriously like 2a.m. - our doorbell started ringing like crazy. DH and I both jumped out of bed, startled and disoriented, raced to the door, opened it, and there stood this young woman, covered in blood, shaking and crying, and saying, "Please Help Me!"

It turns out, Ava had rolled her SUV a half mile from our house and had WALKED down to our house, knocking on SIX different doors until she got to us. Nobody answered until we did. She was battered, bruised, and definitely shocky. She kept repeating over and over, "thank you so much for answering the door. Thank you for answering. My cell phone is dead. Do you think my car is ok?"

Tom called 911, and I started some basic first aid triage to assess the extent of the damage. Her injuries were relatively minor - she had a nasty laceration on one of her hands, and a big bump on her head, and she kept saying that she was having trouble breathing - but her air bag had deployed so we were fairly sure that she was ok as far as that went. She was able to give me her father's phone number, and I called him - leaving a message on his voice mail explaining what had happened, that the ambulance was on its way, we didn't know what hospital she was going to and repeating several times, "She is OK."

Once it was obvious that she was stable, and because she was so worried about her car, I got in my truck and drove down to the accident site. She was unbelievably lucky - on more than one count.

You see, in addition to wearing her seat belt - Ava was alone in the car. She'd left her 10 month old son with her father to babysit while she went out with some friends from our neighborhood. That's part of the reason for the wreck. Ava isn't from our town - she lives in Norman, which is a good 45 minutes away. So she didn't realize that the "S" curves a half mile from our house are incredibly treacherous since they T into a gravel road and the gravel frequently creates a slick surface on the downhill side of the curves. She'd hit that gravel and flipped like three or four times, coming to rest UPRIGHT against a tree in the deep ditch on the easement. The roof of the back seat was caved completely onto the floor. The baby's car seat - what was left of it - was smashed flat. If he'd been with her, she'd be attending his funeral.

As it was, she was treated an released. She came by with her father and her son later that afternoon to say "thank you for answering your door." All I could say was, "Oh, HONEY! I'm so HAPPY to see you up and walking around! And I'm so happy that we were home and able to help."

So, thanks Laur -- the embellishment really did clench things for me. I saw it and knew EXACTLY what these papers wanted to be.
