My grandfather, Calvin Bray (July 27, 1866-October12, 1957) and his oldest son, Clyde (August 14, 1895-January 14, 1989) ran a Merry-Go-Round known as “The Swing” at all the picnics and fairs in the area of St. Clair County and Henry County, Missouri, in the early 1900s.

Grandpa built The Swing himself. It was pulled around and around by horses.

Grandpa and Uncle Clyde would start early in the spring, taking The Swing to the first picnic of the season by horse and wagon. They would set up The Swing, run it until the picnic was over, tear it down, load it on the wagon and take off down the road to the next picnic.

After my dad, Earle Bray (April 19, 1905-May 22, 1984), Calvin's middle son, built a replica of the old Swing which he assembled and ran with his riding lawn mower in 1973 at a family reunion at his home outside of Lowry City, Missouri.

Calvin Owen Bray and his wife, Addie (Scott) Bray, had eight children – five boys – Clyde, Roy, Earle, George and Jack – and three girls – Grace, Maude and Pearl.
