For the Lucky 7 contest:
holders contain memories of things my Dad did to show his love. to have this make sense, one has to know that there were twelve children in our family, and that we were poor. i mean really poor.
Journaling aroung edge: My father was not overly affectionate with his kids. Hugs and kisses were few and far between, and "i Love You's" were non-existent. But, he showed his love in other ways: I remember........1. The day he repaired and brought home a bicycle. We had never seen our father ride a bicycle, ever, so it was a sight to see him come riding home on one he had repaired for us to use. We had to share it, but we didn't mind at all. 2. The summer he brought home a "pool". We lived on a horse ranch, and one day he brought home a horse trough. Scoured and clean, he put it in the shade of a tree and filled it with water. It was so cool and soothing during that hot summer. Imagine our surprise and delight when our usually serious father joined us in the "pool" one day. 3. Watermelons by the truckfull. My father had a friend who grew watermelons, and almost every summer, my Dad would buy a truckfull of watermelons for us. We would line them up in the screened-in back porch and eat one day by day. 4. My Dad also had a friend who delivered for Mrs. Baird's. Every now and then, we would load up in the station wagon and go to this man's house to pick and choose Mrs. Baird's products. We would choose sweet pastries while Mom picked up loaves of bread, buns, and rolls. This was a particularly wonderful treat and one we always looked forward to. 5. Snow cones in the summer. He would buy a block of ice and some syrup, and he would make us homemade snow cones. He would make as many as he could until the ice melted. It was a cool, if sticky treat that everyone enjoyed. 6. Going "coon" hunting with Dad. Every now and then, Dad would go out in the night to hunt small game, usually possums, and once in great while, he would ask if we wanted to go with him. I'm sure we were more of a nuisance than anything, but it was exciting to go out in the woods and shine the flashlight for him. *******i really used a lot of embellies on this one, but i think i got them all on my list.... tfl
