13th pages from my Europe Vacation - Vatican city, St. Peter's Square & Basilica.

Journaling:
In 1506 Pope Julius II commissioned architect Donato Bramante to design Saint Peter’s but Bramante died before completing the church, so Michelangelo assumed the supervisory role in 1546. The Basilica is the largest in the world, and left me full of wonder. This was Ryan’s favorite part of our day in Rome. He enjoyed how large the structure was, but marveled just at how beautiful the sunlight was that came through the windows.
All though we saw only a fraction of the church, our tour guide showed us several of the best things. Just inside the doors was Michelangelo’s Pieta, a breathtaking representation of Mother Mary and Jesus. It was my favorite stature of the whole trip. The neatest thing about Saint Peter’s is that everything is made of marble, with a bit of bronze, good and wood over Saint Peter’s tomb. Originally, there were paintings hung on the walls, but artists made exact copies of the paintings with marble, turning the pictures into mosaics. The mosaics are just as beautiful as the originals, but will not face and are easy to clean. Ryan and I topped off our long, wonderful day with some shopping and Italian ice cream in Saint Peter’s Square.
