FRANCONIA NOTCH RIDGE TRAIL (July 28, 2011) – We certainly didn't have the trail to ourselves, but it wasn't too crowed to enjoy the scenery. Here, I caught a photo of my husband alone on the way from Little Haystacks Mountain (elev. 4,760) to Mount Lincoln (elev. 5,089). This image gives a sense of solitude but in reality, there were plenty of people to keep us company. At certain parts, we had to move aside to let people through. We had heard that the trail can get very crowded on weekends, so we were wise to take off in the middle of the week. The total distance of the ridge part was only 1.6 miles, but it seemed to stretch on forever. Maybe it was the heat. Maybe it was the altitude. Whatever it was, Lafayette seemed to get further and further away as we walked. Steve took it slow, with lots of breaks. That was fine with me, though. There were spectacular views in all directions and I could hardly keep my camera in my pocket for more than a minute at a time.
