My junior year of college marked five years since 9/11. I was VP of the College Republicans and we set up a memorial on the quad with 2974 American flags in the shape of 9 - 11 (the number of people who died, excluding the hijackers of course). We got up to do it at about 4 AM and finished by 7. Members stood and read the names of those who passed throughout the day... and sadly, our memorial was the only memorial/observance in the whole town.
