Journaling: Each night, I tuck Max into bed, read him half of a Magic Tree House book, say prayers, and then kiss him goodnight. Without fail, as I’m walking out of his room I will hear, “Mom?” followed by a long pause as Max tries to think of a question to ask me that will stall his bedtime. Usually it starts out as, “In the morning, can we _________ (go to Legoland, buy a new Bionicle, fly to Michigan to see Grandma and Papa)?” Sometimes it’s a little more thoughtful, such as last week’s query of “Mom, what did your voice sound like when you were little?” Tonight’s question made me feel pretty ancient. You asked, “Mom, when you were little, how did your friends know when you wanted to play with them?” I responded that I either called them or went to their house to ask them to play. You seemed confused and said that you thought that we didn’t have phones when I was little. I told you that, yes, we did have phones “way back then”. “But not cell phones, right?” you asked. “Right”, I responded. “Cars?” “Yes, Max. We had cars. Time for bed, Max.” “But, but, but…ummmmm…in the morning, can I get the newspaper before Sam does?” “Yes, Max. Goodnight, Max.” “Good night, Mama.”
