This is my biggest altered item yet, and only my second overall. I made it for my submission in the Altered Items w/a Twist - Round 2 swap. My secret pal, Tigergenesis, is a true animal lover, loves bling, and likes the color combo of black, white, red. So....this is what I came up with.
The tray was thoroughly sanded, painted twice, decoupaged with zebra pp, then sealed twice with Hard Coat Mod Podge. All that extra sanding gave it a very smooth finish, and the Hard Coat is waterproof making the tray durable and waterproof. A matching set of coasters (see other pics) was made to coordinate. Details of other areas on the tray can be seen better in other pics in my gallery.
Believe it or not, the bottom of this tray is probably my favorite part of the whole thing. I love the stark color contrasts. After painting the bottom black, I painted and added several wooden dowels to give the flimsy bottom support. Now it can be used to carry items, which is, after all, what a tray is intended for. The red "feet" are painted wooden balls, cut in half (purchased that way). These allow the tray to sit on any surface and not mar the surface or the tray. I added extra Hard Coat Mod Podge to the feet for that reason.
