The Leper Colony

Smoking on the ship was limited to designated areas – the clubs and bars and one area on one side of one of the upper decks. The smoking passengers spent so much time in the smoking area of the deck that they formed a group and called themselves “The Leper Colony” because the non-smoking passengers avoided the area where the congregated.

A week or two before cruise ended Bill was in the ship's photo gallery looking at cruise pictures when a man picked up an enlarged group photo. Bill asked him about the group and the man told him they were the members of the Leper Colony. They spent so much time together, that they had become friends and wanted a picture with all of them in it.

Bill told him he had heard of the Leper Colony, and knew that it was the “smoking section” of the ship. Then Bill looked at the picture and asked him, “So what did you take the picture for? Are you going to cross each of you off as you go?”

Well, the cruise ended on February 19th. The man Bill was talking to died in his sleep on the ship on the night of February 17th.

Cabin Fever Gone Wild

When we got off the cruise ship in California there was a fire truck and an ambulance in the parking lot and a man being lifted off the pavement and placed on a stretcher.

We learned that this couple spent 46 days and nights on the cruise, but once the cruise was over they had the brawl to end all brawls, she knocked him unconscious and he was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. At last they made it through the cruise without trying to kill each other on the ship!
