Still Wednesday, April 13, 2011 - After leaving the seahorse farm we stumbled across an International Market where Bill bought another Humuhumunukanukaapaia'a t'shirt for me (this one is lavender). Perfect, since the humu fish (for short) is the state fish of Hawaii, and Bill's nickname for me is Humu. I also scored a gorgeous new caftan – floor length cotton and beautifully made. The print is very Hawaiian and the colors are teal and green. I love it

While we were still in downtown Kona we walked to the “ocean” side of the street to Huggo's where we split a hamburger. The tables were right in the sand and our table was all the way against the seawall! There was a cruise ship anchored and Bill wanted to try to stow-away on it. I'm glad we decided to share one meal; we still couldn't eat it all!

Little did we know that the day was just going to get more and more exciting!

TURN THE CAR AROUND! I SAW A ZEBRA! Bill reluctantly followed my instructions. We had just left Kona (already today we had been the Seahorse Farm, International Market and Huggo's) and were taking the 3/2 hour scenic route around the Island back to Hilo.

He went back; not only was there a zebra and a donkey in one fenced area next to the road but the next fence had a bisons and cows with huge horns! (We think they are a longhorn-type cow from Africa, at least that matched the pictures on the internet.) We walked up and took pictures; Bill even petted one of the cows but he didn't like having his horns touched.

I asked Bill to drive down the small road which ran next to these pens, maybe there was a zoo. Right after we turned we saw 2 wild boars or wild pigs right on the side of the road ready to cross the street. A few yards down on the right there was a house and the front yard did actually look like a zoo.

They couple had a stand in their yard and were selling coffee but people were parked everywhere to see the animals. She said they had 46 wild pigs or wild boars – and they were loose. (I'm sure she has more now because a couple of them were in the process of “making more” when we were there.) When she went in the house for a minute she had to “shoo” them away from the door to get in. They also had 16 peacocks and an assortments of cats, chickens, roosters, and guinea hens.

The zebra was her husband's pet from Australia, think she said they had him 16 years. The cows and donkey and bison were also their pets and very sweet. We didn't buy any coffee but Bill did make a donation to them to help feed all these animals!
