I am incorporating recent pix of the heritage tour I took with my cousins last month in with the album of heritage family photos I have. This double lo is very simple, I really wanted the pictures and journalling to speak for themselves. Here is what I wrote in the journalling box:
August 13, 2011
Langley Cemetery – on a quiet, unpaved country road, surrounded by tall, lovely trees and cool, green pastures, still so far away from any city or town. It remains much as it must have been 100 years ago, yet it is neither forgotten nor neglected. I was so pleasantly surprised by the peaceful beauty here. My great-great grandparents, AJ and Ellen Ashcraft, are buried here, along with several of their descendants, including three of their daughters, Sarah Watson, Lucretia Bagby and Louisa Hendershot. I felt so connected to my heritage standing at AJ and Ellen's gravesite. It is hard to describe how visiting their final resting place made them somehow come alive. All the stories I had heard about them and all I had learned in my family research was rushing through my head. I was so touched to see that the grave of their daughter, my great-grandmother Sarah Watson was near them. She went first, dying unexpectedly in 1918 at the young age of 42. It was an extraordinary feeling to know that over 90 years ago, her parents, as well as her husband, children, sisters and brothers, had probably all stood mourning her right in the spot I was standing beside her grave. I was in awe, and I felt so humbled and privileged. It was an experience I will never forget.
