On my side of the family, we draw names a whole year ahead of time and the rule is that 1. we make the gift and 2. It not be consumable.
We all wait until the last week before we start. That's not a rule, that's just how we are. Pathetic.
This year was the worst though. My brother and I went up to visit my mom, and he had mom's name. It's a ten hour drive, and we stopped at a friend's sewing machine shop just 20 miles from mom's house to put the finishing touches on her gift.
Who knew gift giving could be such an adrenalin pumper.
