The People's Republic of China

• China is only slightly larger than the United States but it has 4 times as many inhabitants. The current population if 1,336,718,015

• There are approximately 50,000 Chinese characters. Only about 8,000 are in use; knowledge of 1,500 is necessary for basic literacy.

• Adult literacy rate: 96% (male); 88% (female)

• Standard Chinese (Putonghua), or Mandarin is based on the Beijing dialect and is the national language.

Beijing, The Capital City

• Beijing is the largest city in China. Only Shanghai has more people.

• The name is also spelled Peking (Pee King)

• High-tech industries and tourism play a major role in Beijing's booming economy. Other important industries include finance, banking, insurance, construction and foreigh trade.

• Beijing fell to the Chinese Communists in 1949

• Beijing was founded as a trading center, probably about 2,000 B.C.

• The Mongols conquered China in the late 1200's and set up the Yuan dynasty.

• Marco Polo, an Italian trader, visited Beijing in 1275 and praised its beauty.

• The Ming rulers, who came to power in 1368, made Nanjing their capital. But the moved the capital to Beijing in the early 1400's.

• The Manchu rulers, who succeeded the Ming rulers in 1644, enlarged Beijing and added many palaces and temples.
