The *Boy* With A Curl 1898

This is my Father's cousin, Freddie, the boy with a curl right in the middle of his forehead!! Freddie sits decked out on a lovely wicker chair, so pretty in his finery, and even wearing a little bracelet! And of course there is that sweet curl right in the middle of his forehead!

The photograph was tiny, and it has a crack running down one side of Freddie's face, but it translated well as an enlargement.

Freddie contracted childhood polio and spent the rest of his life on crutches. He supported himself making "whirlygigs" for people's gardens and houses.

As a gesture of respect for Freddie's courage in building a life for himself despite his handicap, I created this page that pays homage to his adult vocation as a woodworker who created artful "whirlys."

I made a frame with molding pastes and sprays that feature 2 large whirlygigs spinning in opposite corners. There are also 3 little whirlygigs in the upper left corner of the page. Although Freddie made many different types of whirlygigs, I chose to make little circles for this baby layout. Oftentimes Freddie made bird whirlys, and the birds on this page are nod to that.

I also used pieces of old antique baby clothes and tatting from old dresses, and old beads to further enhance this baby layout.

This is my submission for the April Heritage challenge, the twist being use a baby picture.
