In 1914, before she was married, my grandmother was a telephone operator at the New York City Telephone Exchange, Pennsylvania Station. The photos I have are grainy with torn corners. I restored them as best as I could. The top photo shows my grandmother (arrow) working the switchboard and the bottom shows her (arrow) in the break room. It looks like the women had to be monitored at all times, even in the break room.
