Journaling: From our hotel, Cabinas Leyko, in San Carlos we hired a boat to take us up the Rio Frio to a private rain forest preserve. We left from the hotel to find the out of the way dock. To get to the boat we had to walk across a Myst like plank and use a hollow log to step down into a muddy area which was about 30 feet or so to the boat docks. We walked across a canoe to get into the boat that took us to the preserve. The boat ride was very pleasant and took about an hour.
For reasons I cannot explain, I did not take many pictures that afternoon. The facility is a camp set up with private rooms, dorms, kitchen, classroom, a swimming pool and running water with showers and indoor toilets. Volunteers stay for weeks at a time. The grounds were well maintained and the site was empty except for caretakers when we were there.
Our guide, Julio, was well informed and led us for a hike back into the forest. It took about an hour to get to the primary forest. Julio lives a short distance behind the camp facilities and grows trees and a few root crops for cash. He also raises iguanas and pacas to be returned to the wild.
Unfortunately, I found the heat and humidity over-whelming and only walked about 1 ½ hours into the forest. I wanted to make sure I could walk back and deeply regret that my endurance was not better.
