I had a few tintypes (image is actually a direct positive on a thin sheet of iron metal) in my box of photos. At one time I almost tossed them because they were blackened, somewhat bent, and it was quite difficult to even see the image. The other day I decided to scan them and do my best to try to restore them. Surprisingly, I was able to recreate the image even though it is still somewhat blurry, spotted and shadowy. This is probably the best of the lot, but I'm going to try to scan, restore and scrap all of them.
Tintypes were often taken at amusement parks, carnivals, fairs, etc. They were often taken in period costumes against a backdrop. This is a photo of my grandmother (front right) and some of her friends. It was taken circa 1913, so I believe that it may have actually been taken at the beach and that they were wearing their own bathing suits. My other tintypes are all with obviously costumes.
I'm so glad that I didn't give up and toss them.

I have quite a few tintypes in my collection as well; have scanned and editted quite a few of them too. Once I get a few other projects done, I'm looking forward to scrapping some of them.This is a great pic; love the outfits! perfect pps too.

Wow what a treasure of a photo and how awesome that you were able to scan and recreate it. I have many old photo's that are quite damaged and thankful that they weren't thrown out. Love this!! Your heritage pages are wonderful!!

So glad you didn't toss the tintypes!!! I think they have a charm that sometimes surpasses the photograph because of the mottling and discoloration. A wonderful page, perfect papers to compliment the amazing tintype, wonderful design and placement!!
