Been 13 years since we've been there. Didn't know all the details though. Don't remember anything about sharks. I don't remember, but dh says we walked most of the way there. And, yes, beautiful scenery pics and bg pp.
I've been here!!!! It has been almost 30 years since I have been in Hawaii and I still remember this. I first thought it would be fun to walk across until the sentence containing "hammerhead shark breeding ground" appeared. LOL! The painting is beautiful.
I remember the day I was there - it really did look like a hat. I never knew you could walk it at low tide and I certainly never knew about the hammerhead sharks. I remember hearing this legend about the volcano goddess but I couldn't remember quite what it was -thanks for reminding me my friend.
Chinaman's Hat (Mokolii) is a popular spot for taking pictures on Oahu's windward coast. The small island is located at the north end of Kaneohe Bay and is part of the 157-acre Kualoa Regional Park. Kualoa used to be a training ground for Oahu's high chiefs, and Kualii, the first king of Oahu, lived there.
Mokolii means “little lizard” in Hawaiian. It's called Chinaman's Hat because of its cone shape which resembles the peasant's hat worn in rural China. All you will find on the island are a few palm trees, two small beaches and two sea caves.
During low tide, it is possible to walk right over; the distance to Mokolii from Kualoa Park is about 1,477 feet. It can take up to 45 minutes to make it over there due to the sometimes strong current and waves. You will most likely counter hammerhead sharks on your way over as this is a hammerhead shark breeding ground. Most people who go there come with a kayak, surfboard or small boat.
