On February 13th were got to the airport early – while Bill was turning in the rental car Joe played “Under the Boardwalk” for me on his new ukulele. He really didn't want me to keep taking pictures of him, as you can tell by the picture on the third right. That is his threatening look.

We had a nice (or decent) meal at the Honolulu airport and then went to the gate to catch our plane. Bill inquired where the gate was and we were sent to the other end of the airport. Literally the opposite side! All of a sudden we were in a time crunch because we were told we were not near the correct gate.

We all started running with all our carry-ons in our arms but I couldn't keep up and my new shoes did not help matters – they were hurting me! The only way to make the plane was to run “full speed ahead” and since I was limping by now Bill grabbed a baggage cart, threw on our carry-ons – and ME! With me on the cart, hanging on for dear life, Joe and Bill ran as fast as they could while Bill pushed me in the cart. It still took us 10-15 minutes to get to the gate.

We got there to find out we had been given incorrect information, the gate we wanted was located just a few feet from where we were standing when we asked for directions. Bill told me to get back on the cart and off we took again, making very good time but it was a long distance.

We got to our gate just to see our plane taxi to the end of the runway. We missed our plane!

Fortunately, there was another in a couple hours so we all broke out our computers while we waited. The best part was, this one did not have a long layover in the middle so we actually go home earlier than if we had been on the original flight!

MENEHUNE AT WORK

This sign was posted in construction areas around the Honolulu airport.

In Hawaiian mythology, the Menehune [pronounced meh-neh-HOO-neh] are said to be a people, sometimes described as dwarfs in size, who live in the deep forests and hidden valleys of the Hawaiian Islands, far from the eyes of normal humans. Their favorite food is the maiʻa (banana), but they also like fish.

The Menehune were said to be superb craftspeople. Legends say that the Menehune built temples (heiau), fishponds, roads, canoes, and houses. They are said to have lived in Hawaiʻi before settlers arrived from Polynesia many centuries ago.
