Journaling is: The story behind this picture isn’t actually a thousand words, but it still bears telling. Trent is age 6 in this picture. His personality is as large as life. He is usually happy and always on the go. He is not a quiet kid by any means, and he does things his own way (read that as stubborn or as creative, both apply). He is curious about everything, and yes, he is mischievous at times. We were visiting the Renaissance Festival when this picture was taken. My sister travels with them, so when the fair is going on in MN we try to go for a day and enjoy. On this particular visit, we had been walking around the grounds when we came to a character known as “Beggar” sitting in the middle of the road. Anyone who has ever been to the Renaissance Festival knows that part of the fun is the people working there being in character and “playing” the part with the audience so to speak. And so, we came across Beggar, with a crowd of people around him, well, begging. He was banging his pot and drawing in the dirt and people were giving him spare change. We stopped and watched for a minute and Trent asked what he was doing. “He’s pretending to be poor and begging, and people are giving him money,” I replied. And at that moment, someone in the crowd threw a bunch of coins toward Beggar and his pot. Before I could say another word, Trent ran straight toward Beggar. Or should I say he ran straight for the money! He reached down, took one of the coins; smiling the entire time. He was not going to let free money be given just to Beggar! Trent started shouting, “I got one! I got one!” The crowd went crazy laughing and pointing at Trent who ran behind Beggar to get the coin (which you can see from the picture –he even got Beggar to laugh as he was running back to me with the coin between his fingers). The picture is fuzzy, but I’m glad I snapped it quick. Because the story behind the picture is not only funny, but it shows how Trent lives life everyday – carefree and happy, with just a little bit of mischief mixed in. Oh, and I let Trent keep that coin, but we did give Beggar another one. Sept. 2007
