Give a Cheer
My mother and her sisters were sent to live in a boarding school in Scotland, while their parents remained in India in the late 1940's. My grandfather managed a tea plantation outside of Darjeeling, where my mother and her sisters were born, but it had become dangerous, and so the girls went back to Scotland, ages 5, 6 and 8, to live at a freezing boarding school. they did not see their parents for 3 years. This photo was taken about 1952, in Northern Scotland, Broughty ferry. The girls are wearing their new Indian skirts brought back by their parents. It's such a poignant photo to me, knowing how badly treated they were at the boarding school, and that they were without their parents for so long. My grandfather couldn't stand to be back in Scotland, and went back to India for a long time after this, but the girls stayed with their mother in Scotland and attended a local day school after this.
My mum brough me some of her old pics when she last visited me from Australia last summer. i am enjoying recording her history. I used the Asian flavor papers here, to represent the Indian part of the story.
