Bill had been through Wallace, Idaho before and wanted me to see this little town. It was an absolutely charming old town with beautiful green mountains for a backdrop.

Most of the exterior scenes for the movie Dante's Peak were shot in Wallace. (The volcano rim footage was shot at Mt. St. Helen's. and interior footage was shot on a Hollywood sound stage.) But historic downtown Wallace was the city used for the fictional town.

We spent the night in an old hotel downtown called “The Brooks Hotel” because we wanted to stay in the historical district. In the lobby was a scrapbook of the town as they were filming Dante's Peak. It was interesting to see the machines adding all the ash to the streets and studio cameras, trucks, and film crews everywhere! The parking lot for the hotel was in back of the building and that is where the helicopter scenes in the movie were filmed.

The postcard on this page is of the hotel where we stayed and there is also a photograph I took of the building as it was starting to get dark.

We ate outside at a table on the sidewalk of the Pizza Factory and talked about what we wanted to do the next day. Bill wanted to go on the Silver Mine tour and I wanted to take the brothel tour. We both wanted to check out a few of the historic downtown antique shops.

We did both tours and added several new pieces of American Fostoria to our collection.
