The kitchen at the Oasis was also its nerve center. This entire wall was covered with lists of local names and phone numbers but it has been painted over to protect privacy of some of the customers who are still living or have family living in Wallace.
Next to the now-blank wall is a chest of drawers with a line of wind-up kitchen timers on top of it. There is a timer for each of the girl's coded with the color painted on the girl's bedroom doors (the same color code is on her personal medicine cabinet and private drawer in the bathroom). "When the timer rang the maid knocked on the door and said, “Time's up!”.

Photo to the left: The top drawer of the chest is open to display a collection of gears and springs from broken timers. Even thought they bought the best and most expensive timers available, they wore out from over-use.
It was interesting to me that the timers were originally kept in the girl's rooms but the men complained that the ticking was distracting and the bell going off was even more distracting so they were eventually all kept in the kitchen and the maid notified them when the timer went off.
Procedure for payment was very businesslike. Customers paid their prostitute up front. She then went to the kitchen and placed the money in a slit on the top of her color-coded locked box. Ginger had the only keys to open the locks. Then the girl had to “register” the guest and write down the time he was to be taken to her room on a daily activity log. She then punched a time card, set a timer and ran back to her room.

(The photo on the bottom right is actuall a shot of all the broken timers inside the drawer. The upper right shows the locked boxes where the girls stuffed the money. They decorated the front of their boxes with stickers - once the money was put in they no longer had access. The upper left photo shows the time clock they had to punch before and after each customer in the upper right. A stack of time cards is above it. The time punched on the time clock and the time on the sign in registry and the money in the drawer had to reconcile.
