Talk Nerdy to Me: Word Nerd by Krystal Hartley and Jenn Barrette

Journaling: One of the best experiences of my life was when I was editing and writing for fashion & travel magazines. Besides being my first job, I learned so much about copyediting and journalistic integrity that I still carry to this day, no matter what I am writing professionally. I loved the unique struggles an editor goes through. Like memorizing the proper spellings of ages-old fashion houses and luxury brands. (Wincing in sympathy when spotting a cover credit “outfit by Louis Vuittton” or in an article, finding the author had mentioned “Fred Perry” and “Perry Ellis” thinking they were one and the same.) Finding synonyms for words like “stylish,” “dynamic,” or “effervescent.” Agonizing over an article’s word count. Metaphorically tearing hair out during page plans. But perhaps the habit I carry to this day is my almost-compulsive mental correction of grammar, no matter where I see it! Blogs, social media, magazines--if it doesn’t look or sound right, I’ll wince and correct it. Yes, I’ve been known to grab a pen and scribble copyediting symbols all over a magazine page! Friends who ask me to “take a quick look” at what they’ve written can find themselves faced with a page or document filled with my suggestions. I’m not obnoxious about it--only those who get me tend to bear the brunt of my compulsive grammar correcting. Recently, I had to help design a program on basic business writing and editing. I went one-on-one with participants, helping them navigate the often-hairy waters of business correspondence. I had so much fun!
