Journaling reads: When I watched you excitedly take picture after picture with a toy camera at our recent playdate, a little light bulb went off in my head. Why not give you our old point-and-shoot camera to practice with? You've watched me fiddle with my camera and you even tell your friends about all the weird things I've photographed. I've been meaning to get you involved in process. You already know what all the different strobes in my studio are called, and you even know how to use gels to change the color of the light. I figured this camera would give you good practice taking pictures all by yourself! The first lesson is composition, and I've already taught you the importance of tight framing (some adults still haven't figured this out as I get a nice view of the messy interior of their house). I let you go to town on the dreadful on-camera flash because I'll teach you proper lighting techniques further down the road.
But in the meantime, you've been using that camera as a means of self-expression. I can tell you photograph people and things that are important to you. Among the pictures on the memory card include: several pictures of Thomas, mommy taking pictures of you, Elmo, your crib, daddy, Eva and Amelia dancing at school, our desktop computer, Thomas' toy cars, your feet, photos on the wall of your room, a picture of winter in a book about seasons, and our train tracks.
I'm so glad to have a fellow photo enthusiast in the house. We're going to have so much to talk about in the coming years!
