Like many Australians, I am completely obsessed with World War 1. This is a photo of my MIL's father, at the beginning of WW1, in Belgium, where they faught for the French army in the battle of Verdun. My MIL's father is sitting, with the dog. In this village, my MIL's parents met and later married, although he was gassed while in the trenches, and had permanent neurological and psychological issues that plagued him for the rest of his life. I am very indebted to my MIL for explaining all these old photos to me, and very touched when she shared some of her WW2 experiences with me too, as she never discusses the horrors of seeing her home bombed and family members killed, but I think it important to record and remember these terrible episodes in our history.
