I've seen the shutter turned into card storage (with the slat angled in the opposite direction of course). You could I suppose also hold embellishments etc.

I have an old shutter like that in my dining room that I got from my MIL's antique shop. I repainted and hung framed pictures on it. Just stuck the stands of the frames between the slats. I get alot of compliments on it.
