Nice to read sight words but to be able to decode words is key to reading. Learn the rules and you can read anything without having been taught it as a sight word. Can ya tell I am a phonics fan? Good for him, and I agree with you, definition should go hand-in-and with the reading. :)Good luck.

I was talking to the literacy teacher at the school (she overseas all of the reading programs I guess) and she said "they don't really need to know what the word means necessarily at this point...just need to be able to read them since that is what the benchmark assessments are measuring...their ability to read X amount of words" This bugs me. Everything seems to be about memorizing vs understanding lately. While I was still working in the schools we were seeing this trend start and I didn't like it then. I definitely don't like it now... I won't even get started on the haphazard way they do the math program. lol That's a whole other bag of chips there.. It all comes back to our state government having people who probably never taught young children come up with all these new tests and assessments that force our teachers to try to teach things in a way that isn't beneficial to our kids! I feel for our teachers... I know many of ours hate the way things are going now. But they have soo little say in anything =/
