In January we took a trip to northwestern Montana, with the thought of moving there. I had lived in that area in the 60's, and d/h is originally from Vermont, so the snow and cold aren't intimidating. We knew they had had an asbestos problem years ago, but didn't realize it was ongoing. Sadly, the mine owners gave away tailings to anyone who wanted it for landscaping, fills, etc., even town parks and playgrounds. Now the land is saturated with asbestos, and there is a Super Fund created to assist the victims. New cases of lung disease are diagnosed each day. It's so sad to see the toll taken on this lovely area, and my heart goes out to the residents. I took very few photos, and the ones I did are bleak, much like these.
