So far I have 3 zippered binders. One for text/phrases/words, one for holiday, and a larger one for everything else. Since the file name begins with "text", "Christmas", "travel", etc., that tells me which binder to look in. Inside the binders I have dividers for the various categories. Most of the stamps go into photo protectors since the stamps will fit into 4x6 slots. For the larger stamps, I use full-size page protectors. I take the back plastic off of the stamps so that the stamps somewhat stick inside the protectors. (I save this back plastic piece in case I want to use it for some type of project.) Since the binders are zippered, if a stamp does come loose, it at least won't be lost. With the stamp, I also put the label UPC and stamp name, if I have it, but I don't save all the packaging since I already have all the info. I need. The wood stamps go into a desktop plastic organizer with several drawers. I haven't done my wood stamps yet, but I'm planning to have the drawers labeled for various categories. Also, after I get done with all this organizing, then I'm planning to tag 10 files per day—more than 10 I'd probably get bored :>) Most stamp sheets have several different types of stamps on them. I label them with what makes sense to me, but when I tag them, I can mark them with all the different subjects they might contain. i.e. A stamp sheet might have a heart, a steampunk key, "I Love You", and a flourish, so I'd have it named as "Valentine" and it would be in my holiday binder, but I can tag it with not only Valentine, but also heart, love, vintage, steampunk, phrase, flourish. If I do a file search for "flourish", this stamp would show up, along with all the other flourishes. Even if it's one stamp, it often fits several categories. I have an elephant stamp that says "Tons of love". I have it filed in my general binder in the animal category, but I'll tag it with animal, elephant, love, Valentines, phrase. Hope all this makes sense. If not, feel free to ask questions...and thanks for looking :>)
Wow. This really is a good idea. Then you know the company and everything. Now the question - how do you know where they are? Do you have the actual stamps sorted somehow (aside from clear vs wood)
It definitely takes a lot of time, but it will be so nice to actually know what I own so I quit buying duplicates...and also use what I have! One tip: Many of my stamps are discontinued, but I would put the name of the stamp + the word "stamp" in my search and usually sb.com would be a choice. Then I could click on their picture to get a larger view, do a screen print, then crop it in my photo editing program. If you just search for a discontinued stamp on the sb site, it won't come up, but it does through a regular search engine. Unfortunately I have a few stamps that I have no name or any info. for, so just labeled those as "Unknown", although doing a subject search on ebay and etsy I found quite a few unnamed ones. Like I said...it takes work, but now I just need to make sure I keep up with it as I buy new items.
