Vertical photo left – These were the bases for the Zanes (plural form of the name Zeus). Bronze statues of Zeus were placed on these bases (16 bases remain). They wre erected with the fines imposed on atheletes who had committed the offense of cheating. The inscriptions on the bases named the athelete and the nature of the infringement for which he was penalized. The position of the Zanes along the way to the Stadium was a warning to all competitors.


Center right photo – another view of the arch which was called a Krypte. The atheletes, judges, officials and priests entered from the stadium through the Krypte – the audience entered from the embankments. Spectators sat on the ground to watch.

Photo to the right - this is the field where the first Olympic games took place. I was taking a picture of Bill as he walked under the arch onto the field.
