Photo Left – The Metroon – it was dedicted to the Mother of the Gods, Rhea or Kybele. During Roman times the temple was used as a cult palace in honor of the Roman emperors and the cella was adorned with their statues. Dates from the 4th century BC.


Right and both photos below – Temple of Zeus. This was the largest temple and the most important building in the Altis, built between 470 and 456 BCC. The building material, as with most buildings in the Sanctuary, is the local conglomerate which contains shells. It was transported there by raft from an ancient quarry. White marble stucco was applied to the surfaces of walls and columns. The pedimental sculpture, tiles and lion-head spouts were of marble.
